What is Diabetes ?

a disease in which the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired, resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and elevated levels of glucose in the blood and urine.

Type 1 Diabetes

It’s rare. Only about 5% of people with diabetes have type 1. It’s more common in whites than in African-Americans. It affects men and women equally. Although the disease usually starts in people under 20, it can happen at any age

Type 2 Diabetes

Most people with the condition have type 2. There are about 27 million people in the U.S. with it. Another 86 million have pre-diabetes: Their blood glucose is not normal, but not high enough to be diabetes yet.
